Matthew Ebel SMCPrinceton Event

Matthew Ebel/Social Media Club Princeton NJThis month’s meeting was a change of pace for our group.  After finally getting a chance to socialize and network with fellow members, independent piano rocker Matthew Ebel talked to the group about how he’s crafted his business model to earn a living from selling his music.  Matthew explained how he doesn’t just sell his music on iTunes, but has dedicated fans that purchase subscription plans that give them access to much more than just his music (including new songs every month).  Matthew also licenses his music for professional use and actively works with PR / advertising / marketing firms to produce music for hire.

We were lucky enough to have Matthew not only travel from Boston MA speak to our group, but give us a performance!  We were treated to an amazing live show that was also broadcast on the internet using Ustream.TV.  Matthew’s concerts are listed as a ‘Featured Show’ and attracts as many as 10,000 simultaneous viewers.  You can catch his shows – live & for free – online weekly.

(Thanks to Jay Bryant for grabbing my camera and snapping some photos!)

We would also like to thank VMeals and Rojo Loco for catering the night’s event!  If you ever need event catering in New Jersey, Philadelphia, or Boston, be sure to give Peter a call at 434.817.6145.

It is our hope and mission to provide unique and informative meetups to the Social Media Club – and that doesn’t always mean showing up, sitting down, watching a Power Point, taking notes, and leaving.  We strive to be *social* and reach beyond the technology.  Our group also attracts attendees from as far as NYC, Philadelphia, Delaware and  – of course – all over New Jersey.  If you are interested in expanding your experiences, learning new ideas and concepts, and meeting new people – we would love to have you!  Be sure to check our calendar to find out our meeting dates!

December 2009 Holiday Meetup

While there is no ‘official’ meetup planned for December, I thought it would be fun just to meet socially (isn’t this why we are interested in SMC?!) on Wednesday December 16th at the Salt Creek Grill Princeton from 6pm – 8pm.  Salt Creek Grill is also having 1/2 Price Wines-by-the-Glass that night!

If you can make it early, be sure to take advantage of Salt Creek Grill’s Buy One Entree, Get One Free deal going on from 4pm – 5:30pm.  There is also a live jazz band playing from 7pm – 10pm so feel free to stay longer and enjoy the music if you like.

Leave a comment on this post to let us know you’re attending!!

Web2Open & Podcamp Foundation

I wanted to pass along information on a social media and Web 2.0 conference in New York City on Monday November 16, 2009 through Thursday November 19, 2009.  O’Reilly Media, Inc. and TechWeb are presenting the Web2Expo. Web2Expo showcases the latest Web 2.0 business models, development paradigms and design strategies for the builders of the next-generation Web. Part tradeshow, part education, and all networking, Web2Expo is considered a must-attend event on the East Coast.

This year Web2Expo is offereing free passes that includes access to the expo hall, all keynote sessions, all sponsored sessions, Web2Open presented by Podcamp Foundation, Launch Pad, Birds of a Feather Sessions, and a Booth Crawl. If you would like to attend Web2Open for free, register for an Expo Only pass using code webny09opn now through November 15, 2009.

Web2Open, presented by the PodCamp Foundation, is Web 2.0 Expo’s “unconference” – a free, community-driven event happening at Javits Conference Center in New York City, where you can connect with other participants to discuss Web 2.0 topics and questions. As an unconference, there will be a mix of pre-scheduled content and an open grid for attendees to add sessions via an onsite grid. All talks will emphasize participation and conversation over presentations.

Wednesday November 18 and Thursday November 19 are the two Web2Open dates, but expo floor passes as well as the other free benefits are ongoing throughout the week.  Hope to see you there!

Great Kickoff Meeting!

I wanted to thank everyone who came out the the Princeton Public Library last night for the very first meeting of Social Media Club Princeton NJ!  The meeting included an overview of what Social Media Club is, what we hope the Princeton chapter will be, a “Social Media 101″ talk, and an example of how social media WORKS (“The #7thSon Phenomenon“) You know what the best part was? EVERYONE at the meetup talking and gaining information and ideas from each other!

For anyone that either attended last night – or wanted to – feel free to comment on this post and leave your name, blog / website, Twitter account or whatever other infomation you would like to pass along to other attendees so they can *network* with you!

Thanks again for being part of something really amazing!  We all look forward to seeing you again soon.
